Foot, Ankle, and Heel Injuries

Cutting-Edge Treatment For Foot, Ankle & Heel Injuries

Whether you’re running, jumping, catching footballs or baseballs, kicking soccer balls, skiing, sliding or wielding a lacrosse stick, your feet and ankles are vital for playing all kinds of sports. That’s why it’s so important to avoid injuring these parts of your body. The smallest sprain or strain can keep you off your feet and out of the game.

It’s no wonder that foot, ankle and heel injuries are so common among athletes. When they inevitably happen, getting the proper treatment as quickly as possible can mitigate the risk of permanent damage, or you may never enjoy your sport again.

At True Sports Physical Therapy, we use cutting-edge therapies and treatments to help all athletes recover from any foot, ankle or heel injury they come to us with.

Foot, Ankle, & Heel Injuries in Athletes

Athletes suffer from a variety of foot, ankle and heel injuries, although they can happen to anyone. All can be painfully debilitating and require rest and treatment to recover from before you can use your foot again. Some of the most common sports-related foot, ankle and heel injuries include:

  • Tendonitis of the foot or ankle- Overuse can cause the tendons in the foot and ankle to swell painfully and get stiff, resulting in difficulty walking.
  • Foot and ankle fractures- Your feet and ankles contain many small bones that can be broken if you land on them wrong, sustain an impact or even overuse them. A fracture may be accompanied by swelling, intense pain, bruising and instability.
  • Foot strains- Overuse or sharp movements can cause painful strains and even tears in foot muscles or tendons.
  • Plantar fasciitis- This is characterized by a stabbing pain in your foot, especially in the first few steps after being still. The pain is caused by repetitive stress and tearing of the fascia.
  • Turf toe- This is the common term for a sprain in the ligaments around the big toe. Symptoms include pain, swelling and limited movement of the toe.
  • Achilles rupture- The Achilles tendon connects the heel bone to the calf muscle and is extremely painful when it tears.
  • Heel pain– Discomfort in the heel is often a result of plantar fasciitis, Baxter’s neuritis, tarsal tunnel syndrome, calcaneal apophysitis, Achilles tendonitis, bursitis, calcaneal stress fractures and contusions.

Typical Surgeries to Correct Athletic Foot, Ankle & Heel Injuries

Fortunately, few foot, ankle and heel injuries require surgery. This is good news for athletes who are concerned about a long recovery preventing them from practicing and competing. However, for the severest injuries, surgery and patience will be the only way to recover enough to participate in your sport again. These are some of the most common surgeries used to treat sports-related foot, ankle and heel injuries.

  • Achilles tendon repair surgery- While doctors will try to avoid surgery for most sports injuries, surgical repair is the best option for a torn Achilles tendon because the non-surgical approach takes longer to heal and puts the tendon at risk of another rupture. Usually, your surgeon will reattach the torn ends of the tendon. Expect recovery to take as long as six months.
  • Metatarsal fractures surgery- Metatarsals are the long bones that extend from your toes into your feet. Accidents and repetitive stress can break them. If immobilization of the foot fails to keep the bones in place during healing, your doctor may choose to surgically place medical hardware to straighten the bones.
  • Ankle stabilization surgery- Most ankle injuries heal with rest, but chronic instability from multiple injuries may require surgery. Most surgeons will opt for lateral ankle ligament reconstruction, which tightens the lateral ankle ligaments to stabilize the ankle.

Whether your sports-related injury requires surgery or not, working with a physical therapist during recovery will help eliminate pain and restore the full function of your foot or ankle.
