Football Injuries

Elite Football Athletes Trust True Sports

Football is one of the most popular sports in America, so it should be no surprise that it leads all other sports in the number of injuries in the United States. Annually, about 300,000 adults, young adults and children are treated in emergency rooms for football-related injuries and about 20 succumb to their injury, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission

Whether you’re an elite athlete playing for a team in the National Football League or a high school phenom hoping to go pro someday, physical therapy is often on the front line of treatment when it comes to football injury rehabilitation. Athletes rely on True Sports physical therapists for extraordinary care that features one-on-one sessions at state-of-the-art facilities (we have five throughout Baltimore to choose from) and doctors who benefit from over 50 years of combined expertise. We’ll tailor a recovery plan for your rehabilitation that not only gets you back to 100 percent as soon as possible, we’ll get you back to the football field stronger than ever.

Common Football Injuries

As a football player, you know how physical the sport is no matter what position you play. Despite the serious protection required to play the game, including specialized uniforms, helmets, pads, braces and supports, injury is possible for any athlete after any kickoff.

Some of the most common football-related injuries include:

  • Concussions
  • Turf Toe
  • Fractures
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Sprains and Strains
  • Spine Injuries

With non-professional players, nearly 40% of injuries occur among 15- to 19-year-old boys and mostly take place at school or other public playing facilities. Injuries range from minor strains and sprains to severe head trauma from repeated impact.

All of these injuries can be extremely painful, even if not dangerous for your long-term health. You should get professional medical treatment and advice for these injuries. While some of the more minor football injuries just need some ice and rest, most benefit from physical therapy and others are severe enough to require surgery.

Severe Football Injuries Requiring Surgery

Many a football player find themselves in an operating room after a game. When you are in pain and suffering from reduced range of motion due to a football injury, surgery to repair the condition coupled with a personalized rehab plan that includes physical therapy are vital to preserving your body, your ability to play football and your overall health. These injuries include:

  • Torn Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) – This common football injury usually requires surgery. Surgeons often use a graft of the patient’s patellar tendon or hamstring to repair the torn ACL.
  • Achilles Tendonitis – If Achilles tendonitis isn’t treated properly early on, the tendon may rupture and require surgery to sew or suture the tendon back together.
  • Torn Meniscus – Some meniscus tears heal with little intervention, but complete tears often require minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to repair the cartilage.
  • Patellar (Kneecap) Dislocation – Some athletes develop chronic patellar dislocation. To stop this kind of movement, a surgeon will perform surgery to remove dislodged pieces of bone and smooth out damaged cartilage to help the kneecap stay in place after recovery.
  • Severe Bone Fractures – Depending on the size of the bone, the location of the break and the pattern of the fracture, surgery may be required to set and repair a broken bone using metal medical hardware to ensure correct healing.
  • Shoulder Dislocations – A severe shoulder dislocation may require reconstruction surgery to tighten torn or stretched tendons and ligaments and stabilize the shoulder again.
