Soccer Rehab

Athlete-First Soccer Injury Rehab and Prevention

Soccer is a highly competitive sport in Maryland, producing some of the top athletes at the elite, college and youth levels. It’s no secret that the sport also produces sidelining injuries, too.

True Sports Physical Therapy works with soccer players of all ages and understands the high level of play required for the sport, especially in Baltimore and the surrounding area. We use evidence-based individualized treatment by highly-experienced physical therapists to return players to the turf with the speed, agility and strength that every soccer player needs.

Don’t Ignore These Soccer Injuries

A sport played by running, kicking and advanced footwork like soccer is going to result in injury from time to time. Some will be from accidents on the playing field and others from physical stress. It is not uncommon for long-term soccer players to experience pain and injury from these kinds of conditions:

  • Ankle sprain
  • Calf strain
  • Cartilage tear
  • Clavicle fracture
  • Concussion
  • Foot fracture
  • Knee sprain
  • Kneecap bursitis
  • Wrist fracture

All of these conditions require some form of medical attention. Minor sprains can recover with ice, compression and rest. Fractures or a concussion should be attended to by a physician. Over-the-counter pain relief medication can help manage the pain or talk to your MD about a prescription.

Never ignore or play through pain. It’s important that you take a break from playing soccer until your injury is healed, otherwise you could cause serious damage that requires more complex treatment.

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation for Soccer-Related Injuries

Sometimes soccer players sustain a severe enough injury that they require surgery to regain proper function and relieve persistent pain. Coupled with personalized physical therapy and appropriate recuperation time, surgery does not mean the end of your playing days. For soccer players, these surgeries can help them play again in time:

  • Meniscus Tear Repair – These pads of cartilage in the knee take a beating in contact sports like soccer. A severe tear will require arthroscopic surgery to remove damaged cartilage and repair the tear.
  • Patellofemoral Surgery – Patellofemoral pain syndrome, or runner’s knee, is common in soccer players and may necessitate surgery if ignored too long. The condition is a catch-all for any pain in the knee from overuse, so your surgeon may either remove or replace damaged cartilage or even correct the position of your kneecap depending on your specific case.
  • Patellar Tendonitis Surgery – Frequent jumping can painfully stress and tear the tendon that connects your kneecap to the shin. This so-called “jumpers knee” injury can cause tendon tissue to die if not treated early. In this case, surgery is performed to remove painful, inflamed, or dead tissue.
  • Hamstring Tear Surgery – It is possible to tear your hamstring muscle or for the tendon attached to it to tear away from the pelvic bone. Both injuries require surgery to repair or reposition the muscle.
  • Achilles Tendinosis Surgery – Overuse from running can chronically damage the tendon fibers in your Achilles, the tendon that connects your calf to your heel bone. In severe cases, your surgeon will remove damaged fibers and may need to reattach the tendon to the bone.
